Cell Salts: Small Remedies with a Big Role
If you’re new to homeopathy, you may have heard of remedies such as Arnica, Nux vomica, or Aconite. But there is another group of remedies that deserves a place in every homeopathic medicine cabinet: cell salts.
Cell salts are also known as tissue salts or biochemic remedies. They are mineral substances that are prepared homeopathically and are traditionally used to support the body's cells and tissues.
There are 12 primary cell salts, each associated with a particular mineral and a range of physical and functional patterns.
Why minerals?
Minerals are essential to life. Our bodies need minerals for countless processes, including nerve function, muscle contraction, fluid balance, bone health, and cellular activity.
The idea behind cell salts is different from simply taking a mineral supplement. Rather than supplying a large quantity of a mineral, cell salts are prepared in homeopathic potencies.
The traditional biochemic approach, developed by Dr. Wilhelm Heinrich Schüssler, proposed that disturbances in the body's mineral balance could contribute to symptoms and that appropriately prepared mineral salts could help restore balance at the cellular level. This is where cell salts become particularly interesting.
The 12 Cell Salts
The traditional twelve cell salts are:
Calcarea fluorica – associated with connective tissues, elasticity, and hard tissues.
Calcarea phosphorica – traditionally associated with bones, growth, and nourishment.
Calcarea sulphurica – associated with tissue repair and cleansing processes.
Ferrum phosphoricum – commonly thought of as a first-stage remedy for inflammation, fever, and minor injuries.
Kali muriaticum – traditionally associated with mucus membranes and conditions involving thick, white secretions.
Kali phosphoricum – often considered the "nerve salt," traditionally used when there is nervous exhaustion, fatigue, or mental strain.
Kali sulphuricum – associated with skin and mucus membranes and traditionally considered a later-stage inflammation remedy.
Magnesia phosphorica – perhaps best known for cramping, spasms, and nerve pain that may improve with warmth or pressure.
Natrum muriaticum – traditionally associated with fluid balance and dryness.
Natrum phosphoricum – associated with acid-alkaline balance and digestive complaints.
Natrum sulphuricum – traditionally associated with fluid balance and the liver.
Silicea – associated with connective tissue, skin, hair, nails, and the body's ability to eliminate foreign material.
These descriptions are only a starting point. As with any homeopathic remedy, the individual pattern matters.
Why I like cell salts
One of the things I enjoy about cell salts is their simplicity.
You don't necessarily have to know a long list of complicated symptoms to begin learning about them. Once you understand the basic characteristics of the 12 salts, you can start recognizing patterns.
For someone just beginning with homeopathy, learning the 12 cell salts can be much less overwhelming than trying to memorize hundreds of remedies.
A simple example
Imagine someone who develops painful muscle cramps. Rather than immediately asking, "Which of the hundreds of homeopathic remedies covers muscle cramps?" we can begin by looking at the characteristics of their muscle cramps.
Is the cramping better from warmth?
Does pressure help?
Is there a particular time of day when it occurs?
Are there other symptoms occurring at the same time?
A pattern of cramping that is dramatically relieved by warmth and pressure might bring Magnesia Phosphorica to mind.
The details matter.
That's one of the things that makes homeopathy so fascinating: we're not simply matching a disease name to a remedy. We're looking at the individual’s expression of the problem(s).
Where do you start?
If you're new to cell salts, don't try to learn all 12 at once.
Start with a few of the commonly studied cell salts and become familiar with their key characteristics. Then gradually add others. Keep a cell salt reference nearby and begin observing patterns in yourself and your family. (My favorite Cell Salt book is listed on the Resources page on this site.)
And remember: learning homeopathy is a process. You don't need to know everything before you can begin. If you would like to begin learning homeopathy for first aid/acute issues you can get more information on joining our Homeopathy Study Group. We would love to have you join us!
The 12 cell salts are a wonderful place to start.
Small remedies. Simple beginnings. A whole new way of looking at the body.

Annette
